Warm Up Like a Pro: Joel Schwärzler’s Go-To Workout Routine

For tennis talent and AlphaTauri ambassador Joel Schwärzler, performance begins long before he steps onto the court. Off-court training is an essential part of his routine. We met the Austrian player in Kitzbühel, where he shared the warm-up exercises he relies on to get his body ready for performance while helping to prevent injury.

Joel begins every training session with a series of plank variations, starting with the classic plank and moving into side planks. While holding the side plank position, he lifts and lowers his hips to fully engage and activate the core.

He then shifts his focus to the arms and shoulders — an essential part of any tennis warm-up, especially when it comes to injury prevention. For this exercise, Joel uses a resistance band to create additional tension, slowly moving the arm up and down in a controlled motion. The key, he explains, is to keep the shoulder relaxed and down, avoiding any tension that pulls it forward or upward. The movement is then repeated on the opposite side.

To activate the legs and glutes, Joel incorporates lunges into his routine. Alternating between the right and left leg, he steps forward and lowers the back knee all the way to the floor to achieve a full range of motion.

To finish, Joel adds a few explosive movements. Squat jumps not only engage the legs and glutes, but also raise the heart rate. His final exercise consists of short, fast sprints across the tennis court — ideal for sharpening speed and agility.

Joel remains focused on steady progress and the daily commitment required to elevate his game. Off the court, that same mindset is reflected in his style, with the AlphaTauri Performance Jacket standing out as a favourite for its comfort, versatility and refined design.
